5000 VOLTS
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

5000 Volts is the name of a British disco recording act which achieved success throughout Europe during the 1970s. The group consisted of vocalists Tina Charles and Martin Jay, with a changing group of session musicians.

CAREER

They released several singles in the mid 1970s, but did not achieve success until radio stations began playing the B-side to their 1975 single, "Bye Love". The song, "I'm On Fire", was then released in its own right and became a major hit throughout Europe, peaking at number 4 on the UK Singles Chart;[1] and at number 1 on the German Top100 Singles chart and the Swedish chart and also number 10 in South Africa. It also charted in the United States where it reached number 26 and reached the #1 spot on the South African charts. Though Charles provided the vocals, she was not at the time publicly acknowledged as the group's singer, and on the band's 1975 appearance on BBC Television's Top of the Pops, singer/actress Luan Peters fronted the group.

In 1975 the group was expanded by record producer Tony Eyers into a permanent five piece, by the inclusion of Martin Cohen (bass and vocals), Kevin Wells (drums) and Mike Nelson (keyboards).

Subsequent singles failed to attract widespread interest in the UK, although the group became popular in South Africa and Germany. On the eve of a German tour, Charles left the group after a dispute with their record label, continuing on with her successful solo career.[2] She was replaced by Linda Kelly. The next single "Doctor Kiss-Kiss" reached number 8 in the UK,[1] and number 6 in South Africa, but the band struggled to maintain public interest. A handful of further UK singles and a self-titled album followed, as the band tried to come back with "Light the Flame of Love", "Take Me Back" and "(Walkin' On) A Love Cloud" throughout 1976/77 (Walking On A Love Cloud did however top the South African charts in June 1977). None of those songs registered with the UK commercial mainstream. One further single, "Can't Stop Myself from Loving You" (South Africa #12), appeared the following year before the band, never fully recovered from Charles' acrimonious departure, disbanded for good.

Jay launched a solo career without success, and eventually returned to his earlier role as a session musician, working for such bands as Enigma and Tight Fit in 1981, and the UK Mixmasters in 1990.

There was a need for a smartly selected two-disc Chic compilation. The Definitive Groove Collection plugs that gap. Ardent disco fanatics who aren't quite crazed enough to obtain all the albums, and yet not completely sated by a single-disc anthology, would do well to pick it up. As with a lot of the other volumes in Rhino's The Definitive Groove Collection and The Definitive Soul Collection series, this set is basically an update and combination of two single-disc sets that were released during the '90s and early 2000s. It contains every Chic song that touched a chart in the U.S., from "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)" through 1992's "Your Love" and "Chic Mystique." And, crucially, there are a few cases (including "Good Times," "At Last I Am Free," and "I Want Your Love") where it favors full-length versions over single edits. The Very Best of Chic, released in 2000 by Rhino, remains the best single-disc introduction, but setting yourself back a few extra bucks to get a more extensive overview could not be an unwise decision.

BILLY PRESTON
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William Everett "Billy" Preston (September 2, 1946 – June 6, 2006) was an American rhythm and blues musician from Houston, Texas raised mostly in Los Angeles, California.[1] In addition to his successful, Grammy Award-winning career as a solo artist, Preston collaborated with some of the greatest names in the music industry, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Band, Nat King Cole, Little Richard, Eric Burdon, Ray Charles, Joe Cocker, George Harrison, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Sam Cooke, King Curtis, Sammy Davis Jr., Aretha Franklin, the Jackson 5, Quincy Jones, Mick Jagger, Phyllis Hyman, Richie Sambora, Sly Stone, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Norah Jones and Ringo Starr. He played the Fender Rhodes electric piano and the Hammond organ on the Get Back sessions in 1969.

Preston and Tony Sheridan are the only two non-Beatles to receive billing as an artist alongside the Beatles (as distinct from receiving credit as a session musician on album packaging) on an official Beatles record release. The label of the "Get Back" single credits the artists on the record as The Beatles with Billy Preston.

EARLY CAREER

Preston began playing piano while sitting on his mother's lap at age three, and he was considered something of a child prodigy on piano and organ. By the age of 10 he was performing in the bands of gospel singers Mahalia Jackson, James Cleveland, and Andrae Crouch. At age 12 he began a side career acting, and appeared in the 1958 Paramount Pictures film St. Louis Blues, portraying blues composer W.C. Handy as a young man. In the 1960s he performed with Little Richard and Ray Charles, and in 1963, aged just 16, he played organ on the Sam Cooke album Night Beat. He also began a recording career as a solo artist with the 1965 album The Most Exciting Organ Ever. He was also a regular on the mid-1960s ABC-TV musical variety series Shindig! as a member of the show's house band.

RELATIONSHIP WITH THE BEATLES

Preston is one of several people sometimes referred to by outsiders as a "Fifth Beatle." At one point during the Get Back sessions, John Lennon even proposed the idea of having him as the "Fifth Beatle" (Paul countered that it was bad enough with four.)[2] Preston first met The Beatles in 1962 while part of Little Richard's touring band, when their manager Brian Epstein organized a Liverpool show, which The Beatles opened. The Washington Post explained their subsequent meeting:
“ They'd hook up again in 1969, when The Beatles were about to break up while recording the last album they released, Let It Be (they would later record Abbey Road, which was released prior to Let It Be). George Harrison, always Preston's best Beatles buddy, had quit and walked out of the studio and gone to a Ray Charles concert in London, where Preston was playing organ. Harrison brought Preston back to the studio, where his keen musicianship and gregarious personality temporarily calmed the tension.[3] ”

Preston played with The Beatles for several of the Get Back sessions, some of the material from which would later be culled to make the film Let it Be and its companion album, during which he joined the band for its rooftop concert, its final public appearance.[3] "Get Back", one of the album's singles, was credited to "The Beatles with Billy Preston," the only time such a joint credit had been given on an official Beatles-sanctioned release (as distinct from an unsanctioned reissue of some Hamburg-era recordings on which they were the backing group for Tony Sheridan). The credit was bestowed by The Beatles to reflect the extent of Preston's presence on the track; his electric piano is prominent throughout and he plays an extended solo. Preston also worked (in a more limited role) on the Abbey Road album, contributing to the tracks "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" and "Something."

In 1978 he appeared as Sgt. Pepper in Robert Stigwood's film Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which was very loosely based on The Beatles' album of the same name.

POST-BEATLES

Signed to The Beatles' Apple label, in 1969, Preston released the album That's the Way God Planned It and a single of the same name (produced by George Harrison). His relationship with Harrison continued after the breakup of The Beatles; he was the first artist to record "My Sweet Lord", in his album Encouraging Words (Harrison's own version of the single hit number one in the U.S. and the UK and was the first number one by a former Beatle after they disbanded) and he was on several of Harrison's 1970s solo albums. Preston also made notable contributions to The Concert for Bangladesh, the Harrison-organized charity concert, toured with Harrison on his 1974 tour of North America and, after Harrison's death, The Concert for George. Preston also worked on solo recordings by two other ex-Beatles, John Lennon and Ringo Starr.

His solo career also peaked at this time, beginning with 1972's "Outa-Space", an instrumental track that further popularized the sound of the clavinet in funk music. The song reached #2 on the U.S. Hot 100, #1 on the R&B chart, and won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. in June 1972.[4]

Over the next two years, he followed up with the #1 hits "Will It Go Round in Circles" and "Nothing From Nothing", and the #4 hit "Space Race." All three releases each sold in excess of one million copies.[4] American Bandstand host and executive producer Dick Clark enjoyed "Space Race" so much that he used the instrumental for the mid-show break for virtually the remainder of its run.

After The Beatles, Preston played keyboards for The Rolling Stones, alongside pianists Nicky Hopkins and Ian Stewart. Preston appears on the Stones' albums Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main Street, Goats Head Soup, It's Only Rock'n Roll and Black and Blue. He toured as a support act on their 1973 European Tour and recorded his live album Live European Tour 1973 in Munich with Mick Taylor on guitar. In 1974 he composed one of Joe Cocker's biggest hits, "You Are So Beautiful". On October 11, 1975, he was the first musical guest on Saturday Night Live's series premiere episode (along with Janis Ian). Also in that year, and in 1976, he again toured with the Stones. This time he played two of his own songs, backed by the Stones, in the middle of every concert. Preston's 1973 Do You Love Me was the basis for the Stones' Melody on their 1976 Black and Blue album. The Stones and Preston parted company in 1977, mainly due to a row over money. He continued to play on solo records by Stones members and made appearances again on the Stones' 1981 Tattoo You and 1997 Bridges to Babylon albums.

He had a hit single in 1980 with Syreeta Wright with the ballad "With You I'm Born Again" that reached number four on the charts in the US. A few years later, however, he was arrested and convicted for insurance fraud after setting fire to his own house in Los Angeles,[5] and he was treated for alcohol and cocaine addictions. In 1991, Preston was arrested in Los Angeles after physically attacking a teenage transvestite prostitute after he discovered the prostitute's real age and sex. After submitting to a drug test, he tested positive for cocaine. That year, he entered no-contest pleas to the cocaine and assault charges. He was sentenced to nine months at a drug rehabilitation center and three months of house arrest.

Preston overcame his problems in the early 1990s, toured with Eric Clapton, and recorded with a wide range of artists. He also toured with Ringo Starr and appeared on the 1990 live album Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band. He was also invited to become a member of The Band in 1991, after the death of their piano player, Stan Szelest. He completed a tour, but his above-mentioned legal problems put an end to the collaboration before they had a chance to record together in the studio.

In 1997-1998 Billy Preston played organ during the choir numbers on the UPN comedy show Good News.

While touring and fighting his own health problems, Preston received the news that on 29 November 2001, his old friend George Harrison had died after a long battle with throat cancer. Preston, among many of Harrison's longtime friends, performed in the 2002 Concert for George in London, England, to play a tribute song. Preston participated in the concert at the Royal Albert Hall, and his performance of "My Sweet Lord" has received critical acclaim. Preston played the Hammond organ for the show and sang "Isn't It A Pity" and "My Sweet Lord" plus backing vocals on most of the other songs. Ringo Starr called him one of the greatest Hammond players of all time (in the theatrical version of the concert).

In 2002 he appeared on the Johnny Cash album American IV: The Man Comes Around, playing piano on "Personal Jesus".

He toured with The Funk Brothers and Steve Winwood in Europe in early 2004 and then with his friend Eric Clapton in Europe and North America.

In 2004 Preston performed as a Jazz Organist with a solo on Ray Charles' "Genius Loves Company" duets album teaming up with Charles and Norah Jones on the song "Here We Go Again"

In 2005 he recorded "Go Where No One's Gone Before", the main title song for the anime series L/R: Licensed by Royalty.

Preston played clavinet on the song "Warlocks" for the Red Hot Chili Peppers album Stadium Arcadium released in 2006. Although very ill by this point, he jumped out of his bed after hearing a tape of the song given to him by the band, recorded his part, and went back to bed.[6] Preston's final contributions were the gospel-tinged organ on the Neil Diamond album 12 Songs, and his keyboard work on The Road to Escondido by Eric Clapton and J. J. Cale, and some of the first tracks on the Reach album by Is'real Benton.

In March 2005, Preston appeared on the American Idol's fourth season finale. Playing piano, he performed "With You I'm Born Again" with Vonzell Solomon, who finished in third place.

Preston made his last public appearance in late 2005 at the Los Angeles press junket for the re-release of the Concert for Bangla Desh movie. He was in good spirits and talked to many in the press. Afterwards he played a three song set of "Give Me Love", "My Sweet Lord" and "Isn't It a Pity", featuring Dhani Harrison on guitar and Ringo Starr on drums for the final song only.

There still remains an unreleased CD of Beatles covers that he had been working on for several years before his death. Many tracks from this CD were previewed by him at The Fest For Beatles Fans shows in the years before his death.

Jazz musician Miles Davis was heavily influenced by Preston's music during his funk rock period of the early 1970s. The 1972 album Get Up With It features a track called "Billy Preston" in his honor.

DEATH

Preston had battled kidney disease in his later years, brought on by his hypertension. He received a kidney transplant in 2002, but his health continued to deteriorate. He died on June 6, 2006 in Scottsdale, Arizona, of complications of malignant hypertension that resulted in kidney failure and other complications. He had voluntarily entered a drug rehabilitation clinic in Malibu, CA, at the suggestion of guitarist Is'real Benton and suffered pericarditis there, leading to respiratory failure that left him in a coma from November 21, 2005.[7] Shortly before he entered rehab, he told his manager, Joyce Moore, that he was gay.[8] His funeral was held on June 20 at the Faithful Central Bible Church in Inglewood, California, where he was interred at Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, California.

JIMMY "BO" HORNE
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jimmy "Bo" Horne (born Jimmie Horace Horne, Jr. on September 28, 1949 - in West Palm Beach, Florida) is an American musician, singer, and recording artist.

BIOGRAPHY

Horne was an only child and both his parents were school teachers.

He enjoyed some success in the 1970s, recording dance-oriented songs and novelty tracks for such labels as Alston and Sunshine Records. "Dance Across the Floor" was his lone R&B Top 10 hit in 1978, and it was written and produced by Harry Wayne Casey, of KC and the Sunshine Band fame. The song also appeared in the hit Brazilian gangster movie City of God. It has been sampled by controversial Gangsta rap group Da Lench Mob for their 1993 song "Freedom Got an AK", as well as by DJ Cash Money & Marvelous in their 1988 song "The Mighty Hard Rocker".[1]

Horne's other Top 20 R&B single was "You Get Me Hot" in 1979 for Sunshine Records, although the prior release, "Spank," (sampled in 1998 for D'Menace's "Deep Menace",[2] as well as Ultra Naté's "Release The Pressure") also received airplay in many clubs. "Spank" featured in the 1998 film 54.

Horne's last single was the disco flavoured "Is It In" in 1980, which (due to the decline of disco's popularity) flopped, but later featured on the fictional radio station, Paradise FM, on Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories. It was also sampled by Jungle Brothers for the 1989 song "Beyond this World" as well as Kasino for their 1998 song "Nasty Girl".

Horne's 1978 song "Let me (Let Me Be Your Lover)" was sampled by the Stereo MCs in their 1992 song "Connected"

Horne's song "Spank" was heavily sampled by DJ Falcon in Falcon's song "first"

For a year between 1997 and 1998, Horne's 1977 song "Get Happy" was played in the background of The Chris Rock Show on HBO. It is also sampled in The Council's "Prepare For The Shining".

Horne has also been a guest on the Marilu Henner Show, along with Harry Wayne Casey (K.C).

BERNARD EDWARDS
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bernard Edwards (October 31, 1952 – April 18, 1996) born in Greenville, North Carolina, was a bass guitar player and record producer, both as a member of Chic and on his own. He died of pneumonia while touring in Japan.

HISTORY

Edwards who grew up in Brooklyn, New York City, met Nile Rodgers in the early 1970s. The two formed the Big Apple Band (active from 1972-1976) and then united with drummer Tony Thompson to eventually form Chic together with singer Norma Jean Wright.

With Chic (active 1976-1983) Edwards created era-defining hits such as "Dance, Dance, Dance", "Everybody Dance", "Le Freak", "I Want Your Love" and "Good Times". Edwards also worked with Nile Rodgers to produce and write for other artists, using Chic to perform everything musically and vocally except lead vocals. Those productions with Norma Jean Wright, Sister Sledge, Sheila and B. Devotion, Diana Ross, Johnny Mathis, Debbie Harry and Fonzi Thornton led to more hits such as "Saturday", "He's The Greatest Dancer", "We Are Family", "Spacer", "Upside Down", "I'm Coming Out" and "Backfired" to name a few.

Chic split in 1983 after personal and artistic differences between Edwards and Rodgers.

Edwards released a solo album the same year, and in 1985 he was instrumental in the formation of the supergroup Power Station. The band's first album was produced by Edwards and featured Chic drummer Tony Thompson, and Duran Duran members John and Andy Taylor as well as singer Robert Palmer. Edwards followed this by producing Robert Palmer's hit album Riptide. He continued to produce artists throughout the 1980s and 90s. Among others, he worked with Diana Ross, Adam Ant, Rod Stewart, Air Supply, ABC and Duran Duran.

Edwards was the father of multi-platinum record producer Bernard "Focus..." Edwards, Jr. who has produced songs for Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé Knowles, Busta Rhymes, Bishop Lamont, Tony Yayo and more.

Edwards teamed up with Nile Rodgers again for the Chic reunion in the early 1990s and released the album Chic-Ism in 1992.

In 1996 Nile Rodgers was named JT Superproducer of the Year in Japan, and was invited to perform there with Chic in April of that year. Just before the concert at the Budokan Arena in Tokyo, Edwards fell ill, but despite Rodgers' insistence, he refused to cancel the gig. He managed to perform but had to be helped at times. After the concert he retired to his hotel room where he was later found dead by Rodgers. The cause of death was ruled to be pneumonia.

BASSES

Edwards played a Music Man StingRay (bequeathed to Duran Duran's John Taylor after his death), a Fender Precision Bass, and a B.C. Rich "Eagle" bass during the prime of Chic. Later he would also use a Spector NS. He also was known to play a G & L L-1000 and a Sadowsky standard.

INFLUENCE

Bernard Edwards is considered one of the most important bass players of the 20th century. His bass line from Chic hit "Good Times" has become one of the most copied pieces of music in history, and had a huge influence on musicians of many genres when released and was the inspiration for "Another One Bites the Dust" by Rock group Queen.

The bass line was used without credit or royalty on Sugarhill Gang's "Rappers Delight" in 1979 - the first rap song to become a mainstream hit. The following twenty-odd years has seen it sampled by artists of diverse genres, from Rap to Punk and Techno to Pop. Duran Duran bassist John Taylor often played the song in homage during his solo performances, and cited Edwards as his primary influence.

Geddy Lee, the front man and bassist of Rush, mentioned Bernard Edwards in an interview for a German bass magazine.

On 19 September 2005 Edwards was honored posthumously for his outstanding achievement as a producer, when he was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame at a ceremony held in New York.

BROOKLYN DREAMS
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Brooklyn Dreams was a successful singing group of the late 1970s and early 1980s mixing R&B and doo-wop harmonies with contemporary dance/disco music and best-known for a number of collaborations with singer Donna Summer. The band consisted of Joe "Bean" Esposito, Eddie Hokenson and Bruce Sudano. Esposito provided lead vocals for the band and played guitar, while Sudano played keyboards and Hokenson played drums and occasionally sang lead vocals.

BIOGRAPHY

The group was founded by three departing members of The Mystics. Their biggest hit was the single "Heaven Knows", a single by Donna Summer featuring Joe Esposito on second lead and the group singing backup. Released on the Casablanca label in January 1979, the single reached # 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. A version of the song is featured on Summer's Live and More album. Their version of the song appears on the band's 1979 album, Sleepless Nights, with Esposito singing the lead vocal and Summer singing second lead with the group again contributing backing vocals, and credited as "Brooklyn Dreams with Donna Summer". The band sang backup on other tracks from several Summer albums during this period.

Their self-titled debut album Brooklyn Dreams (1977) received positive critical reviews, comparing the group's harmonies to those of The Righteous Brothers. Singles "Sad Eyes" and the dance track "Music, Harmony and Rhythm" were modest hits. The latter song has been sampled over the years by various Hip hop artists. While the album was a modest a hit, the group gained public awareness via an appearance as "Professor La Plano and The Planotones" in the 1978 film American Hot Wax.

Their sophomore effort Sleepless Nights (1979) was a greater commercial success for the group as it featured their musical collaboration with their label mate Summer. The group toured as opening act for Summer and found itself hosting the Midnight Special[2] and performing on the popular talk shows The Mike Douglas Show and The Merv Griffin Show, as well as Dick Clark's American Bandstand, Solid Gold and "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert". That year, the band co-wrote "Bad Girls" with Summer, and the single topped Billboard's Hot 100, Hot Black Singles and Hot Disco charts. Their own "Make It Last", however, did not improve on earlier chartings.

Their third album Joy Ride (1979) was a solid effort effort but moved them farther away from their R&B roots. Produced by Summer's recording engineer Juergen Koppers, but did not have the support of Casablanca, which was having a financial crisis, the album did not generate a chart single had a much more Euro dance sound. Casabalanca (which distributed the band's label, Millennium) had changed direction by 1980 with the demise of Disco with which it was closely related, and chairman Neil Bogart's departure. Summer also departed the label for the new Geffen Records.

"Won't Let Go" (1980) was the last album by the group which was moving away from the labels push to Disco, and closer to a R&B pop sound they originally intended to produce . "Won't Let Go" received overall good reviews. Members of the group by this time were already pursuing other projects separately or together, but not under the name Brooklyn Dreams.

Sudano and Summer would later marry. Sudano notably co-wrote the Dolly Parton hit "Starting Over Again", and a number of album tracks for Summer. Sudano released his first solo album, Fugitive Kind, for Millennium/RCA in 1981, which included his own recording of "Starting Over Again". The song was recorded again in 1997 by Reba McEntire and was the title song of her CD. Sudano released his second solo album, Rainy Day Soul, twenty-three years later, in 2004. Sudano was voted AC artist of the year by New Music Weekly. Sudano's next CD, Life & the Romantic, was set to be released in March, 2009.

Esposito went on to solo success on numerous movie soundtracks, notably Flashdance, The Karate Kid and Coming To America, for which he recorded a duet with Laura Branigan. He also released three solo albums "Solitary Man" with Giorgio Moroder, " Joe, Bruce and 2nd Avenue" the most recent being Treated and Released in 1996. In 2008 and 2009, Esposito was working on tracks for a new solo album.

"Deez Hollywood Knights", a track on Snoop Doggs 2008 album Ego Trippin, samples the group's title track for the soundtrack for the 1980 film The Hollywood Knights.
