As Boney M. enjoyed huge chart success with their 1978 Christmas single 'Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord' which was the 5th best selling single ever in the UK at the time it was only a logical consequence to record a whole album with christmas carols. Mary's boy Child is naturally included on this mesmerizing Christmas album which was originally released in November 1981, gaining Boney M. 6 Platinumand 15 Gold records. The first single off the album is the opening track 'Little Drummer Boy', Liz Mitchell sings the lead vocal (as she does on all the tracks here) and it is beautifully accompanied by The Christmas Choir from London. 'White Christmas' & 'Jingle Bells' are turned into wonderful reggae versions, still full of atmosphere as is the up-tempo disco version of 'Feliz Navidad'. 'Winter Fairy-Tale' is a nice instrumental track before 'Mary's Boy Child' ends side 1. Side 2 is more low-key, opening with a Christmas medley consisting of 'Silent Night' and two English re-works of German psalms, 'Snow Falls Over The Ground' and 'Hear Ye The Message', with Liz Mitchell occasionally singing in German! Equally heavenly is the version of the French 'Petit Papa Noël' with its wonderful deep choir ending the song. 'Zion's Daughter' is an English re-working of Händel's 'Tochter Zion', an up-tempo song that was to be released as the second single off the album, backed with 'White Christmas', for Christmas the following year. In Scandinavia, however, they opted for 'Feliz Navidad', Spain chose 'Jingle Bells', both singles were backed with 'White Christmas'. One of the many highlights on the album is the wonderful 'When A Child Is Born', beautifully sung by Liz Mitchell whose contralto voice in general keeps the songs pleasantly low-key, avoiding the songs from getting hysterically overblown as it happens on many Christmas albums. 'Darkness Is Falling' is another English re-working of a German traditional, 'I'll Be Home For Christmas' is not the song you'd usually think of but an original song, co-penned by producer Frank Farian who also shares the lead vocals with Liz Mitchell, a nice mid-tempo song to round off this remarkable album that remains a classic ...
