Diamonds for Breakfast

After three great disco albums, Amanda's fourth album, released early 1980, was a bit disappointing. Amanda wasn't too keen on disco anyway, and with the general changes in the music scene, she and producer Anthony Monn opted for a sparsely arranged mixture of rock and new-wave. The first single "Fabulous (Lover, Love Me)", released late 1979, told the tale of someone whom "surgeons built so well" that "nobody could tell that [she] once was somebody else", and the lyrics in the bridge: "Lover! Hug me / Lover! Fu-fu-fu-fabulous" are classic Amanda. The second single "Diamonds" was an okay single but not one of her greatest efforts. Other tracks from the album include the quirky opening track "Rockin' Rollin' (I Hear You Nagging)" which is fun, "I Need A Man" sounded a bit routine. "It's A Better Life" a rock track about a loser, spending the whole day in her flat watching TV. "Oh Boy", the ballad "Insomnia" (also recorded in Italian) and "When" (recorded in Italian as "Ciao") are quite forgettable, and also the track "Ho fatto l'amore con me" (meaning "I've Made Love To Myself"), released as a single in Italy, fails to rise above mediocrity. A song very similar to the latter was "Le chat de Gouttière" which was left off the album. Later in 1980, Amanda recorded "Solomon Gundie" as a single only before commencing work on her fifth album.

"Diamonds For Breakfast" has never been officially released on CD, but there's an excellent Russian release with "Never Trust A Pretty Face" to seek out.
